U.S. to Tell Drug Firms to Report Money Paid to... →
As a follow-up to the previous post, can we now see why even doctors are sucked into the madness? When you got loans barreling down your back as a primary care physician because you didn’t want to sell out as a super specialized doctor, sometimes a little give can’t hurt anyone, right? If you know a little history about ADD and ADHD drugs, much research and journalism has exposed the...

It’s hard enough to be a person in this age of instability. It’s harder to be a woman. And I am finding it is the worst to be a woman of color. (tbc)

Cinnamon: Healing Spices, part 1 →
acupuncturegirl: runningwithneedles: Cinnamon Health Benefits: Balances Blood Sugar Maybe it’s ironic that cinnamon — that spicy-sweet favorite that cooks use to give desserts extra flavor — can help control blood-sugar problems. Or maybe — given the fact that the rate of type 2 diabetes in the United States has doubled in… [Click on the headline to read the entire post.]

The Women of Somalia, brutalized and degraded →
You’re next,” the Shabab warned the girl, a frail 17-year-old who was living with her brother in a squalid refugee camp. Several months later, the men came back. Five militants burst into her hut, pinned her down and gang-raped her, she said. They claimed to be on a jihad, or holy war, and any resistance was considered a crime against Islam, punishable by death. “I’ve had some very bad dreams...

Today I had blood drawn and the phlebotomist was a riot. We were having a ball talking about food, cooking and people. I always appreciate a technician in health care who can make me laugh. That, my friends, is patient care. Patient care is what our health care system should be based on.  :)

It is amazing how in my household, the culture and, therefore the way my parents treat my every decision, defines the boundaries of what I do by my gender, my sex, the simple fact that I have a vagina. This birth canal through which new life is brought into the world is this beautiful gift but our world makes it my ugliest curse. Whether it’s forcing me to wear bleached cotton in me,...

Doctors do not make as much money as you think.  →
indiangeek: themedicalblueprint: Hmm. Something to think about.  Physicians spend about 40,000 hours training and over $300,000 on their education, yet the amount of money they earn per hour is only a few dollars more than a high school teacher. Physicians spend over a decade of potential earning, saving and investing time training and taking on more debt, debt that isn’t tax deductible....

Avoiding Cuts in NIH and Healthcare →
Washington — For the third time in 2011, Congress adopted appropriations legislation that narrowly prevented a partial shutdown of the federal government — this time for the remainder of fiscal year 2012. President Obama signed the measure on Dec. 17, which includes a mixed bag of small spending cuts, increases and freezes for nonmandatory federal health programs. Supporters of the...

Improve Blood Pressure Checks →
The following may help you obtain a better, more accurate reading the next time you have your pressure checked in the harried office.   Insist on being seated for at least 3 minutes before your pressure is taken. “Fresher than a motha’fucka’” I really don’t understand this lyric. Why not say fresher than an apple picked off the tree? Fresher than an oven-baked cookie? Fresher than laundry out of the dryer? Fresher than a new car smell? seriously. Sometimes rap is just terrible because it’s just not creative.
